Reasons to Remove an RV Light Cover

There are a few reasons why campers choose to remove their RV light covers.

When it comes to recreational vehicles in general, there are different lighting fixtures and displays on the interior of RVs.

These various lighting fixtures help in increasing visibility inside the RV. They usually come with a covering that protects them from damage while on the road or in nature.

Most campers learn how to remove these RV light covers so they can experience the full brightness of their installed lighting fixtures.

Some choose to do it to carry out effective cleaning.

While for others, it could be that the RV light cover needs to be replaced because it got broken or damaged.

But the primary reason why every camper chooses to remove his or her RV light covers is to replace a blown-out or faulty bulb.

Removing RV light covers can be done, but it all depends on the model of the recreational vehicle you are using. Basically, RV light covers are mounted onto lighting fixtures using a fastening mechanism that holds them in place, firmly, either with some clippings or screws.

When learning how to remove RV light covers when camping, the type of lighting fixtures installed in the RV interior is also an essential factor to consider.

Most RV light covers require that you slide or gently pinch both sides and pull it out with your bare hand, while others will require some mechanical assistance.

Tools Needed to Remove RV Light Covers

Some tools needed to remove RV light covers held together by mechanical fasteners include:

A pair of electrical hand gloves

Pliers

Scrapers

Screwdrivers

PS: The pair of electrical hand gloves will protect you from any leaking current, or getting injured while handling one of the other two sharp tools.

Now, once you can identify the mechanisms holding your RV lighting fixtures firmly, the next step would be to remove the lighting covers.

How to Remove RV Light Covers?

Source: Youtube.com

The first step to take when trying to remove an RV light cover is to identify any potential screw outlets or openings that could be manipulated safely.

Most RV light covers are protected by some plastic tabs at the back of the mainframe.

You can see these little tabs by using either your screwdriver or pliers by popping the light covers’ brackets out of place.

And once this is done, proceed to use your screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lighting cover.

By so doing, you have successfully removed the RV light cover, and then you can go ahead to change the blown-out bulb, or whatever.

Like I said earlier, RV lighting fixtures come with different types of mechanisms and fasteners that hold them firmly.

Some of them include:

1. Grooves

RV light covers that are held together by grooves have a somewhat narrow edge that fits into the groove on the surface of the lighting base.

When trying to remove RV light covers that are held together by grooves, simply place your fingers against the edge of the lighting covers, then apply a little just a little pressure toward the center and lift the RV light covers out.

2. Latches

Latches, in a way, have a similar resemblance to grooves.

To remove an RV light cover that is held together by latches, simply squeeze in from both sides of the lighting and pull back at the same time.

3. Pries

If you are finding it difficult to notice a groove or latch when removing your RV light cover, there’s a high possibility that the lighting cover is held firmly with a Pry mechanism.

And just as the name goes, you will have to pry the RV light covers to remove them and get access to the bulbs.

But, you have to be very careful when doing this to avoid damaging the light covers in the process of forcing it out.

Often, tools with thin heads like a flathead screwdriver work wonder when it comes to removing RV light covers that are held firmly with pry mechanisms.

Once you are done replacing the blown-out bulb or for whatever reason you chose to remove the RV light cover, you should put the cover back to where it belongs.

If, for any reason, you chose to clean the light covers, make sure it gets dry thoroughly before re-coupling it back to the lighting fixture.

Conclusion

The best step to take when learning how to remove RV light covers during camping is to always look at the instructions on the RV lighting manual. This is because there are specific tools and procedures which may be listed there that can help you out with this operation.

Most RV lighting companies have their company website, which you can easily log on to learn more about their lighting fixtures. Some will even provide a section where you can learn how to remove RV light covers when camping.

Now I’d Love to Hear from You:

What is your primary challenge when removing an RV light cover?

Also, do you think I left out a few things in this guide?

This guide will show you how to ground a generator when camping.

You will also discover the right tools and equipment to carry out a camp generator grounding operation effectively.

One of the biggest misconceptions we often get about grounding a camping generator is that it will protect us from shocks if there is any fault in our system; this is really not the case.

Clearing a fault is the only way not to get shocked when using any electrical appliance. For instance, an electrical wire becomes loose in a toaster while camping.

Source: Amazon.com

Grounding a camping generator only helps to ensure the safe operation of your electrical equipment in the camping while the generator is turned on

Camping generators that are not grounded are usually prone to current flow that’s not consistent, and this can damage appliances and even cause damage to the generator itself.

In most cases, your camping generator is already properly grounded, according to the NEC. The frame of the camping generator already serves as the ground electrode already.

Now, when using extension cords in your campground, as long as the grounding pins are linked to the ground system of your generator, the non-current carrying parts of your camp generator, like the gas tank, are all linked to the frame. Your camp generator is already adequately grounded.

As a result, you do not need a ground rod or external grounding system for your camping generator. However, a few camping generators out there may not be appropriately bonded or unbonded when needed; thus, the need to ground a camping generator before any use.

What Does it Mean to Ground a Camping Generator?

Camping generators are portable in nature; they can be carried easily or moved from one point to another because of their considerable light weight and design.

As a result, grounding a camping generator can be a bit technical.

The term “ground” refers simply to a conductive body and, in this scenario, the earth. In the following reference, it refers to a metal rod or the generator’s frame and a copper wire.

Grounding a camping generator involves creating a lower resistant path between the generator and the earth. As a result, grounding a generator is the conscious connection between the generator’s neutral wires and its grounding means, including all of its non-conducting components.

The electrical term, bonding, on the other hand, is the intentional connection of components of your camping generator electrically (for instance, the generator’s gas tank or engine) to the generator’s frame.

Conversely, the grounding and bonding of circuits of a camping generator must be able to conduct a surge to drive electrical power away from devices plugged into the generator on the camping ground.

Specifically, there must be a 0.2 ohms resistance or less current flow through your grounded generator’s ground wire and metal stake.

Equipment Needed When Grounding a Camp Generator

Grounding a camping generator is pretty easy and would save you a lot of stress if you knew the right tools to use for your grounding.

Some essential tools and equipment that will be needed when grounding a camping generator include the following:

1. Copper Rod and Wires

A copper rod is one of the essential tools for grounding a camping generator. In this case, it’s best to work with a copper rod at least 5 feet long.

Copper wire is the only wire you should use to connect your camp generator to the ground. Note that using just any cable at your disposal is dangerous; use only what is recommended and follow every guideline as stated below.

2. Hammer

A Hammer is used to drive the copper rod into the ground. You could also substitute it with a mallet or any heavy tool available for this purpose.

3. Wire Strippers

Wire strippers are used for stripping the ends of copper wires quickly and effectively. It is one tool often made available to prevent you from getting your nails or teeth all messed up while doing this.

4. Pliers

You will need pliers to wind up the copper wire tightly around the ground rod to enhance a safer connection. A set of quality pliers are best used to avoid loose connections that could be hazardous later on.

5. Wrench

A wrench is used to loosen bolts on the generator to attach the stripped copper wire for effective connection.

How to Ground a Generator when Camping?

Grounding a generator is necessary when camping because the generator being used is most likely to be connected to a wired circuit system and sometimes directly to the many different electrical appliances you brought with you to the camping ground.

Now that all the necessary tools and equipment for grounding a camping generator have been correctly stated, here’s precisely how to ground a generator when camping:

Step 1. Ensure proper conditions of the ground

Before grounding a generator when camping, ensure that the ground on which you will be driving your copper rod is completely dry. It is unsafe to ground a camping generator in a wet condition.

It would help to adequately shelter the space where your camping generator will be grounded.

And finally, make sure your hands are dry when grounding the generator.

Step 2. Drive the copper rod into the ground with your hammer or mallet

Using your hammer or mallet, sink the copper rod deep into the ground (at least eight (8) feet to the ground). Always remember that the deeper into the earth the rod is, the more earthed or grounded the connection would be.

If you drive the rod with more pressure, it should ground far deeper.

And if the ground is too hard to work through, you can try wetting it a bit to let it absorb moisture for some time; but you still have to wait some time for the surface to dry before you can start the grounding.

Note that the copper rod should be driven to the ground at an angle that is not more than 45 degrees. This, in turn, will make things much easier for you.

Step 3: Strip the ends of the copper wire with wire strippers

For a start, keep the copper wires well away from your campsite to avoid any unforeseen complications. Now with the wire strippers, strip both ends of the copper wire carefully.

Also, avoid removing too much copper wire so that most of the cable is not left naked while still ensuring to leave most of it bare.

Step 4. Coil the ends of the copper wire using the pair of pliers

This step involves coiling one end of the copper wire around the copper rod.

Wrap the stripped wire tightly around the copper rod with the pliers, but try not to coil it in a way that it can easily come loose from the vibrations made when the generator is turned on.

And be sure to ensure that the connection is tight enough to ensure the safety of the camp generator for use.

Step 5. Attach the second end of the copper wire to the camping generator

To complete the whole grounding process, loosen the grounding bolt on the generator with your wrench (check the generator’s user manual to know where this component is found).

Then wind the second stripped edge of the copper wire around it and tighten it back properly with the wrench.

Now, your camping generator is ready for use!

You can start the generator by flipping a switch or turning the start key, connecting it to your lovely tent to serve its purpose.

Does a Camping Generator Need a Ground Rod?

The quick answer to this question is NO!

Neither the RVIA, NEC, nor the OSHA state that campers need to ground their portable generators to a ground rod. The concept behind this is that most camping generators have their components already bonded to the generator’s frame.

Due to the design and model of most camping generators, most RV owners can go without grounding their portable generators using a ground rod.

It can be a total waste of time!

Grounding a camping generator is only necessary when you need to plug your devices and appliances directly into your portable generator on the camping ground.

Grounding using a ground rod is also necessary when using a transfer switch.

Safety Precautions to Follow While Grounding a Camping Generator

These include:

The copper rod should be driven at least 8 feet into the ground.

Ensure to use the ideal wire stripper to avoid over stripping.

Make sure the bolts on the generator are properly tightened.

Don’t rush the whole process. Take your time to ensure no accidents when grounding the generator, especially if this is your first time.

What Happens if You Fail to Ground Your Camping Generator?

In short, you could ruin your camping generator.

Grounding a camping generator protects not only your devices plugged into the generator when camping but also the generator itself. Generally, it helps to direct unwanted voltage from damaging your electrical equipment and the generator itself.

CampAway / campaway.org

Proper grounding of a generator when camping protects you, your family, school colleagues (all other persons camping with you), and your possessions from getting hurt by these unpredictable electrical surges.

How to Choose the Perfect Camping Generator?

It would be best if you got a good camping generator as you learn how to ground a generator when camping. It’s also essential to check the description of the type of generator you want to buy for the camping adventure. That is, its exact type and how it operates!

It’s also crucial to consider the weight and size of the generator, its electric capacity, and the type of maintenance required for the generator.

Buying a camping generator without knowing a lot of information about it can leave you in a situation that often keeps you visiting the mechanic workshop for repairs.

When you go outdoors to camp and seek the relaxation that comes with being in touch with nature, you often have to forfeit the luxuries of the modern environment, which you’re quite used to.

But, electricity is one amenity that we would rather not do without, even out in the wilderness. Some campsites have adopted camping generator facilities to generate electricity on campgrounds.

Thus, when sourcing the best portable generators to buy for your camping, it’s best to look out for the following:

Power performance

Noise level

Fuel type and consumption

Size, weight, and portability

Tank size

Whether you are going to use one of such or not, it’s still advisable to have a reliable source of electricity generation to avoid unfortunate circumstances that may end up cutting off communication with the rest of the world.

Electricity is also needed when camping to light up tents, charge mobile devices and laptops, power the television, microwave, and hairdryer, and even charge the RV battery.

Best Portable Generators to Use When Camping

There are different types of camping generators; some include inverter generators, portable generators, and solar generators.

As a result, the best generators for camping include the following:

Jackery Explorer 240 Portable Power Station

Champion Dual Inverter Inverter Generator

Westinghouse iGen 2200 Watt Quiet Inverter Generator

Jackery Compact Battery Generator

PAXCESS Portable Power Generator

Renogy Phoenix Solar Generator

Atima Quiet Portable Gas Power Generator

ROCKPALS Battery Power Small Generator

WEN Super Quiet Portable Generator

Briggs & Stratton 3000 Watt Inverter Generator

How to Increase the Efficiency of Your Camping Generator?

Increasing a camping generator’s efficiency involves reducing noise levels, fuel consumption capacity, and others. These can be achieved by:

Adjusting the camping generator’s exhaust pipes and mufflers will help reduce its noise.

Using a soundproof box limits how far the generator’s sounds travel.

Placing the camping generator on a rubber fabric will help reduce the noise caused by the generator vibrating.

Installing sound deflectors towards the direction of your campground will help scatter sound waves away from your campsite.

Avoid overloading the generator.

Ensure proper maintenance of the generator to extend its durability.

Avoid having scattered and disorganized wired connections.

This post covers:

Different types of shower systems used while camping

How to stay clean while camping

Basic health and environmental tips while camping

And lots more

Let’s get started.

Different Types of Shower Systems Used while Camping

While most campgrounds provide comfort stations for campers, others like the commercial, RV camps make use of shift showers and electricity from the properly grounded generator to warm the water.

However, people that camp out with none of these facilities available can either choose to use baby wipes to clean their bodies after a long stressful day of activities or can refresh themselves in warm temperature showers by one of these methods.

1. Solar Showers

You may or may not have used one of these before, but this method of showering while camping is built from a solar absorbing surface, an insulating bag, a hose, and a showerhead.

Solar showers can be set up by filling the solar shower bag via a water source (a nearby lake or river). But remember not to fill the solar shower bag since water expands when heated to avoid having the bag rip or burst.

And while heating the shower bag, try as much as possible to keep it off the ground to prevent it from losing heat to the earth, except you plan on heating it on a rock surface where the rock absorbs heat from the sun and reflects on the solar bag.

Doing this will help the whole setup heat faster.

Solar shower bags can be hung on a tree branch, with the solar absorbent surface facing the direction of the sun rays.

Now when using the solar shower, hang it above you, making sure that the hose is as straight as possible to allow the water flow with maximum pressure.

Some showerheads have a valve that regulates the water flow out of the hose.

2. Portable Propane Shower

A propane heater shower is the closest you can get to shower at home when outdoor. It heats water stored in its reservoir with propane.

The reservoir, which is made from an insulating material, can store hot water for campers. Similar to the solar shower, it has a hose and a showerhead that can be suspended to aid water flow.

Propane solar panels usually come with extra functionalities like a battery rechargeable pump or a provision for water temperature regulation and a hanger for suspending the showerhead.

3. Shower Tent for Privacy

Even though camps are usually not so crowded, using a shower tent will provide you with the much-needed privacy for a proper relaxing shower.

Camp shower tents come with provision for you to hang either of your propane or solar showerhead and rails for hanging towels and other necessary items like soap and cosmetics.

How to Shower while Camping

This guide won’t teach you “how to shower,” so to say, this is something that every adult knows how to do.

Instead, I’ll be showing you the necessary steps to take when showering at your campsite.

But first, there are two major things you should keep in mind when learning how to shower while camping:

1. Make use of biodegradable soaps when showering while camping. This is because non-biodegradable soap poses a more significant threat to the aqua-life when exposed to waterways.

2. Try to shower at least 200 feet from water sources to prevent soap droplets from running off into nearby rivers. Soap droplets are known to travel through soil, and the further away you shower from water sources, the better.

There are so many ways to maintain personal hygiene and stay clean while camping.

You could also decide to settle for a cold dip in the lake, but remember to consider the risk of hypothermia, as this is a better option on sunny days.

This can be done by simply stripping down to your birthday suit, or with a pair of shorts and a t-shirt to look modest. You can then proceed to jump into the lake, river, or stream, which you’ve had your eyes on all day.

A river bath is one of the most refreshing ways to stay clean while camping.

You could also choose to have a simple sponge and bucket bathe, which gives you the option of heating the water first over a campfire, and with a small-sized bowl to scoop the water while you wash up.

This method of showering while camping is best for a full-body sponge bath, or just in case you want to clean up some key areas of your body, like under your arms, groin, and the back of your knees.

When showering with this method while camping, it’s essential to be mindful of how much water you use to lather up, as you will need to have some left to rinse off.

And never forget, to save the aqua-life, never jump into a lake or river when you’re all covered up in soap!

Ultimately there are different alternatives when it comes to learning how to stay clean while camping.

Always remember to consider the type of soap you choose to shower with; Unscented soaps work best as they are known not to attract insects to your body.

Conclusion

Whether you plan to shower in modernized facilities, always remember to take your towel and flip flops or water boots along with you. Forgetting these can leave you in a stranded and uncomfortable position.

Whatever method you choose to shower while camping depends on your budget, the season, and what’s convenient and easy for you to carry along with you on your camping adventure, noting that some options are more practical than others.

And always remember – dispose of whatever leftover soapy water after showering far away from lakes, rivers, and streams

If you have questions, or you think I left out a few things, please let me know by leaving a comment below.

In this guide, I will show you exactly how to fly with camping gear.

You’re going to learn:

How to fly with camping gear,

How to protect your backpack when flying with camping gear,

What not to pack when flying with camping gear,

And many more.

So if you have plans to travel by air for a camping expenditure, then this guide is for you

Let’s get started!

How to Fly with Camping Gear?

When preparing to go on a camping adventure that requires you flying, it’s important that you learn how to pack and protect your camping gear for the trip

Here’s precisely how to prepare yourself when flying with camping gear

1. Pack Luggages Light and Smart

Stocking up your travelling backpack will incur more substantial fees.

You can choose to purchase a luggage scale to weigh your backpacks before getting to the airport, to avoid exceeding travelling weight limit requirements.

It’s also important to know the basic TSA rules and regulations and check to know your travel airline’s maximum luggage requirement.

2. Pack Only Camping Gears You will Need for the Vacation

This will also help you in reducing the weight of your travelling luggage.

When packing for your camping flight, ask yourself questions like:

Will it be possible to make use of a smaller tent size and leave some gadgets back home?

Do you really need that extra luggage? Won’t it be possible to share with other campers going on the trip with you?

Also, if this is your first camping adventure – when shopping for camping gears, go for camping gears that are light in weight that you know you can afford.

Most often, tents and sleeping bags constitute the most weight of all camping gears. You can also make use of compression sacks to lessen the weight of your camping bags.

A quick hack would be to use the pocket of your clothes to stuff small items.

Here are some quick hacks on packing camping gears when flying:

How To Pack Camping Gears While Flying

1. A Duffel Bag

This kind of camping travelling bag is excellent for packing camping gears for up to 2 campers and meets most travel luggage size requirements. It is very light in weight and folds up good for easy storage.

2. A Laundry Bag

A quick hack could be to use a laundry bag. They are inexpensive, of lightweight and are easy to fold up when not in use.

3. A Saran Wrap

This sounds a bit crazy, but a Saran wrap goes a long way to secure your pack. You can even get one of these clings wraps in some airports for about $9.00 to $15.00 per bag.

4. A Heavy Duty Trash Bag

To make use of this, simply tape the excess of the large, heavy-duty trash bag securely.

You can also choose to get one of those large bags found in some airports which are often used to hold car seats, strollers, and others, but don’t rely solely on them.

5. A Suitcase

Not just any ordinary suitcase, but a hard-sided bag. You can find this kind of suitcase in thrift stores and yard sales.

6. A Cardboard Box

When using a cardboard box, make sure that it doesn’t exceed the required size and dimensions.

How to Protect Your Backpack when Flying with Camping Gear

This is also very important to note when flying with camping gear.

One of the most common mistakes campers make is trying to tuck their straps and hip belt in as best as they can; Doing this will make you run at a risk of getting those straps hung and broken either on the luggage carousel or while in flight.

Here are some useful tips to help you out with this:

Tie and tighten the straps just a little bit so that the backpack handler doesn’t grab a strap.

Then buckle the hip belt from the back around the luggage itself.

Finally, to prevent the straps from getting caught up, tape them down.

What Not to Pack When Flying with Camping Gear

Here’s a list of things you will not be allowed to carry along when flying with camping gear:

1. Bear Spray

You are required to buy your bear spray when you arrive at your destination, and to leave them behind on your return flight.

2. Stove

As you can see, any item that is termed flammable or combustible is prohibited when flying with camping gear.

Instead of just disposing them when you are done camping, and letting it go to waste, you can leave it at a ranger station or sell it or even give it out to another camper.

You can also find campers that will be interested in getting some of these items from you on Facebook groups and various social media platforms.

But if you wish to carry a camping stove along with you on your journey, make sure that it is clean, with no fuel vapours or residue inside.

Safety matches are also allowed when flying with camping gear, but you will only be allowed a book of them, and you’d be required to carry them on you on the plane and not in your checked luggage.

Flashlights are not prohibited either when flying.

Trekking poles though maybe a bit confusing whether or not to carry along.

Most campers brag how they walk with their trekking pole with them pass TSA agents to the aeroplane, but this is not recommended.

Some TSA agents will stop you to make some checks.

Instead, put your trekking poles in your carry on bag. And if you are scared of them breaking, you can slide then into a PVC pipe and tape it at each end.

Knives are also allowed as a carry-on when flying, but make sure that they are properly sheathed or wrapped so as not to harm baggage handlers.

For the other camping gears that don’t violate the above listed, you can take them along with you while flying, but note that all carry-ons must be in your checked luggage.

Conclusion

When flying with camping gear, the key is to keep all your carry-ons as light as possible and avoid carrying extra luggage.

Instead of stocking up on your luggage, you can choose to rent camping gears from an outfitter located in your destination.

Now I’d Love to Hear from You;

What is your worst experience flying with camping gear?

Have you tried renting camping gears before? What was your experience like?

Or maybe you have some packing tips you’d like to share.

Either way, let me know by leaving a comment below!

In this guide, you will discover how to paint RV exterior fiberglass.

You will also learn about the necessary items needed to get the best results with your RV painting. In addition, you will be exposed to the best kind of paints to use for the exterior fiberglass of your RV.

So if you want to give your RV that beautiful look to produce a WOW effect amongst fellow campers, this guide is created just for you.

Also Read: How to Refill Fresh Water Tank During Camping

What Kind of Paints is Best for Painting an RV Exterior Fiberglass?

The first step when painting RV exterior fiberglass is determining what paints to use.

And the truth is that almost every RV has a fiberglass exterior!

When it comes to RV painting, a regular standard all-purpose paint won’t give you the correct type of finish for the job and may even cost you more in time and money.

The best RV fiberglass paints usually contain polyurethane, polyester, acrylic, or epoxy, with a wide range of colors and finishes, including matt, gloss, and high gloss.

All these will help you to get the right kind of finishing that you desire.

So when you go out to purchase an RV paint, read the label on the containers to ensure that what you are buying will be efficient for the job.

Materials You Need to Paint RV Exterior Fiberglass

To prep the RV surface;

An automotive sponge

Soap

Fine grit sandpaper

Palm sander

Painter’s tape

Denatured alcohol

For painting;

Latex-based primer-or similar

RV Fiberglass paint

A paint gun or paintbrush

Acetone

For final finishing;

RV wax

A soft cloth or rag

Fine sandpaper

When painting an RV exterior fiberglass, it is always good to start with a primer.

Although it may cost some extra cash, a primer would ensure that you get that perfectly smooth surface for your RV painting.

When choosing a primer for your RV painting, it’s best to go for ones based on epoxy, latex, or urethane… And if possible, stick with the same brand of paint and primer.

How to Paint RV Exterior Fiberglass

Step 1: Prep the RV Surface

The items needed for this are listed above.

1. Choosing a Good Site for Work

Your garage would be an excellent place to start. Also, note that when choosing a good site for an RV painting, it’s best to pick one that is adequately ventilated.

You can also carry out the work along your driveway, as long as it is out of intense sun reach.

2. Making Use of the Soap and Automotive Sponge

You can prep the fiberglass exterior by cleaning the RV well with your soap and automotive sponge.

Remove whatever mess accumulated over the past years of travels with the RV by wiping down softly.

And don’t forget to focus more emphasis on the rooftop of the RV as bird droppings, dirt, and grime have been known to accumulate more in such regions.

3. Using the Palm Sander and a Wet Sandpaper for a Better Smoothening Effect

There’s no need to spend much time on this. You just want to create a bit of surface texture so that the primer and paint can adhere to each other and the RV surface.

It should not take you more than an hour to cover the whole surface area of the RV. Avoid going back to areas that you have already covered.

4. Applying the Denatured Alcohol

This involves taking an old rag and wiping the entire fiberglass exterior with your denatured alcohol. The denatured alcohol helps eliminate any form of grease left on the RV.

5. Placing the Painter’s Tape

Now, cover whatever part of the RV that needs to be protected from the paint with the painter’s tape. This includes the windshield, windows, doorknobs, and whatever area you feel should be restricted from the paint reach.

Step 2: Painting the RV Fiberglass Exterior

First, start from the front of the RV by applying the primer using whatever method you choose. Your aim must be to cover the entire fiberglass exterior with a smooth, uniform product layer.

Leave it for some hours to dry (depending on how long the manufacturer recommends).

Then apply your RV paint just the same way you did with the primer. You can use a long fluid motion just to keep things going smoothly. By doing this, you tend to avoid paint drips.

Now, leave the painted surface to dry, which takes a bit longer than with the primer.

Note: It may even take up to a day or sometimes longer!

Once dry, if you are unsatisfied with the outcome, you can add another coat of paint for a better look.

Step 3: Finishing the RV Painting

Examine the paintwork and check for any area that looks uneven.

You can fix this by simply rubbing over the surface with fine sandpaper. And to get that specific RV sparkle, give the entire exterior a good polish with the soft cloth or rag and RV wax.

Read through the manufacturer’s instructions to know exactly how long the waxes would take to cure.

Finally, remove all the painter’s tape to reveal the finished result of your successful RV painting job.

Conclusion

When learning how to paint RV exterior fiberglass like a pro, it’s always best to read through the manufacturer’s instructions for the given brand of primer, paint, and waxes you would use for the work.

What is an RV Converter Used for?

RV converters are used basically to prevent the battery of an RV from being drained when it’s connected to a different power source.

An RV is usually powered by an onboard generator or an external source of power. It’s the function of the RV converter to reduce the current coming from the built-in generator or external power source to one that is suitable for the RV to use.

This device converts up to 120V (AC) down to 12V (DC) for accessories and appliances in the RV to use.

And if the converter develops some issues, the onboard batteries will be your direct source of power, which would damage a lot of accessories and appliances in the RV.

In a situation like this, the best step to take would be to consider a more comprehensive and meticulous approach to solving the issue, which often entails inspecting various electrical components in the RV, as well as the RV converter itself.

Some items needed to carry out the necessary tests when learning how to tell if RV converter is bad include:

Multimeter

Baking soda

Water

How to Tell If RV Converter is Bad

You certainly don’t want to replace an RV converter that is not bad unknowingly; this would be a waste of money.

And that is why learning how to tell if RV converter is bad is essential

In fact:

Most RV converter issues are minor and easy to fix cases.

Others could be due to a few technical issues which may require professional attention.

The best ways to tell if an RV converter is faulty is when it shows either of the following issues:

1. A Malfunctioning Cooling Fan

RV converters usually come with an internal cooling fan embedded in it that is designed to prevent it from overheating.

Whenever an RV converter is connected to a 110V (AC) power supply, the cooling fan of the converter starts to run intermittently, and if the voltage at this 110V has a problem, the cooling fan might fail to work at all.

Also, RV converters’ cooling fans have a high possibility of breaking-down or wearing out from frequent use, and when this happens, heat will consistently be developed in the converter, which would cause some of its parts to get damaged.

This, in turn, would cause the RV converter not to function effectively.

How to Test an RV Converter’s Cooling Fan?

To do this, you will need to connect the entry points of the converter to a multimeter.

If the multimeter fails to read, it might just be that it’s the cooling fan that is faulty and not the converter itself.

It may also be that the 110V line, or that the thermostat or thermal sensor is faulty.

To test if all these are working, supply a current different from the 110V line to them, if they work, then you can conclude that the problem is in the 110V line.

But if they don’t, you may have to replace the thermal sensor, the cooling fan itself, or even the converter as a whole.

2. A Faulty Circuit Breaker or Board

Yes, a faulty circuit breaker can affect an RV converter and prevent it from functioning well.

To check if the circuit breaker is faulty or not, first open each of the circuit breakers, starting with the primary input breaker and check for any signs of physical degradation.

If the breakers show no sign of a fault, close them up in reverse order, making sure that the primary input breaker comes last.

Now, try to disconnect the 110 AC power supply from the pedestal and remove each electrical panel from it.

Take a careful look at the backside because acid may tend to accumulate on a connector tab or the wire terminals.

If you notice any sign of corrosion on the connector tab, try to clean it up by mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with 12 ounces of water.

Then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub lightly with the improvised baking soda solution on the affected area.

When all this is done, make sure to leave it to air dry for about 7 to 10 minutes completely. And if all these, the RV converter fails to work, switch to the next alternative.

3. Faulty Resistors or Diodes

Some RV converters still make use of the old fashioned designs of diodes and resistors.

Resistors in an RV converter help to control the 12V DV voltage of the electrical system and onboard batteries. And something as simple as a faulty resistor can prevent the cells from being able to hold a constant charge.

Diodes are quite different from resistors in the sense that they allow an electric current to flow in only one direction, and at the same time prevent current flow in the other direction.

Before testing either of the resistors or diodes, first ensure that you understand the direction of the current flow. And if when testing the diodes with your multimeter, you get a reading, then that diode is still working.

The same applies to the resistors too!

One physical sign you can notice on a bad resistor or diode is a white acidic residue on the converter near the diode or resistor.

If the damage is so severe, you will need to replace the entire RV converter, but if resistors and diodes aren’t the problem, proceed to the next alternative.

4. A Faulty Fuse

Electrical fuses are rated to handle a specified maximum level of current that it was designed for. Once there is something like a power surge or a short circuit, the fuse might burn out to prevent excess current from damaging the main electrical equipment (RV converter).

Check for and replace any burned-out fuses with ones that are of the same current rating.

Making use of fuses with a higher amp rating is likely to damage more sensitive components of your RV’s electrical system, including the RV converter itself.

Conclusion

Now I’d Love to Hear from You:

Are you currently facing any problems with your RV converter?

What is a Camping Percolator?

A camping percolator is a jug-like device that’s able to brew up to 12 cups of coffee very quickly on a camping grill or stove.

The coffee percolator is made of a stainless steel body frame that helps it to resist corrosion and wipes down very easily.

It’s also crafted with a base, tube, basket and basket lid, and its lightweight and durability make it the best fit for outdoor use.

This device will help you get your hot morning coffee going after a cold night of sleeping under the stars.

How to Use a Camping Coffee Percolator

Learning how to use a camping percolator starts with getting the right coffee percolator.

Camping coffee percolators have been part of American iconography since the 1880s.

Although new styles and sizes have been developed for this device, space and weight should still be a major concern when choosing a percolator for camping.

The first time of using a camping coffee percolator can be pretty confusing. Unlike usual electronic coffee makers, coffee percolators usually don’t come with any instructions to help you use it.

A camping coffee percolator comes with a pot and vertical tube (with a stand) that leads from the top of the percolator to its bottom.

There is a basket sitting on the tube, which acts as a perforated chamber with lid.

The tube and basket rest inside the percolator pot.

When assembling a camping coffee percolator, first make sure that the tube’s top and the clear bubble spot all line-up.

Note that the bubble spot is where the boiling fluid rises through the tube, splashing against the walls inside.

Now, here’s exactly how to use a camping percolator and check if it’s brewing:

1. Fill the Percolator Pot with Water

When filling the camping percolator pot, don’t overfill it; instead, just a couple of cups will do to avoid causing a hot mess on your hands.

Most coffee percolators have a fill line on the inside that is there to guide you when filling the pot.

When filling the percolator with water, fill it till the water gets just below the basket insert of the percolator.

2. Add Coffee into the Percolator

You will need to buy filters that fit the basket of the percolator when adding the coffee grounds into the percolator. This is required, especially if you are using regular ground coffee.

But you may not need the filters if you are making use of fresh coarsely ground coffee.

This is where testing out your camping coffee percolator is needed. It may take a couple of trials to figure out the tricks specific to your percolator.

Once you’ve figured out the basket needs, add a heaping teaspoon of ground coffee per cup of water (your desired amount of ground coffee with respect to the quantity of water added earlier).

Then place the basket lid on.

Now, place the whole tube and basket assembly into the percolator pot and proceed to the next step.

3. Put the Percolator to a Low Boil

You can do this by placing the percolator on a camp stove or over a campfire and watch it boil.

If you are using a camping stove, keep the flame that the percolator is on at a medium strength.

It’s essential to monitor the entire process. You can’t just walk away from a camping coffee percolator like regular drip coffee makers.

You will know when the process is almost boiled when the water begins to percolate to the top with a clear view through the bubble spot.

When you notice this happening, you have to lower the heat or move it off the center of the campfire for some time. Let it simmer for another 10 – 15 minutes until the color of the water in the bubble spot continues to darken.

4. Pour and Enjoy your Hot Cup of Coffee

Finally, pour yourself a hot cup of percolated coffee and enjoy it.

Blend in with the beauty of nature around you with a cup in your hand to fend off the chill of the fantastic camping mountain mornings.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Camping Percolator

As you learn how to use a camping coffee percolator, it is also important you learn how to maintain and clean your coffee percolator.

The trick to making the perfect coffee is to keep an eye on the translucent dome.

If the coffee looks too pale, it will not be strong enough; Dark coffee is the real deal – very strong and bitter!

The only flaw of a percolated coffee is that it’s a bit flavorless and charred.

But still, a hot cup of percolated coffee gives you that special dose of nostalgia in the morning after a long cold night camping outdoors.

When you are done preparing your coffee with the percolator, disassemble it by first taking out the stem, then the stem, and clean everything thoroughly.

When cleaning the pot, you will know when it is clean when it gives you that sparkle and sheen. After that, dry the coffee percolator and its respective parts on a drying rack until they are made moisture-free.

Finally, pack the percolator just the same way you had it on your way for the camping adventure.

Conclusion

Coffee while camping has been a daily ritual among campers. Camping without a hand-warming hot cup of percolated coffee just doesn’t seem right.

Percolated coffee gives you that bold smell of perfectly roasted coffee to waft over your camping site every morning.

Now you know how to use a camping percolator; I’d love to hear from you:

Have you ever had a taste of percolated coffee while camping?

Being a true lover of recreational vehicles, you must be already aware of how important it is to learn how to prime RV water pump.

But what does priming an RV water pump entail?

As you may already know, every RV water pump tends to run out of pressure and malfunctions if not handled for a long time, especially during winter.

Priming an RV water pump is one way you can use to get the pump going once again.

It entails flushing back into the RV water pump, then forcing through as a means to stimulate more pressure in the pump. The pressure is stimulated until the pump can start pumping again.

Priming an RV’s water pump is not difficult in any way, the challenging part lies in trying to access the pump.

RV water pumps are usually located beneath the bench seats or in the RV’s cabinets so it can be close to the water tank.

If you don’t find it there, open the cabinet underneath the kitchen sink of the RV and trace the water line to where you see the water pump.

When located, priming the RV water pump is much easy to do.

Whether you just newly installed your RV water pump, or have kept it stored up for a while, it’s still essential to prime it before using it.

How to Prime RV Water Pump

Some items you will need when priming an RV water pump include:

A jar

Flathead screwdrivers

Water

Rubber tubing

Here are the rights steps to take when learning how to prime RV water pump to get the best performance out of it:

1. Disconnect the Line of the Water Outlet from the RV Water Pump

This is usually done by turning the screw found on the attaching collar counterclockwise until you notice it’s loose enough to pull off the hose easily.

If you are unfamiliar with where the outline is; the outline is that clear plastic line that comes out of the RV water pump and goes back into the RV to feed showers, sinks, and toilets.

2. Slipping the Collar Off from the Outlet Line

The next step to take when learning how to prime RV water pump is to slip the collar off from the outlet line to the end of the rubber hose.

Then look for the specific outlet that spouts on the RV water pump.

Now connect the rubber hose to the outlet by screwing the clampdown. Make sure that the rubber hose is of the same size as the waterline and is long enough to extend out from beneath or behind the exact spot of the water pump.

3. Filling the Jar with Water

Prepare about 12 ounces of water (about a soda bottle full) and use it to fill a jar.

When this is done, hold the hose which you connected to the outlet up in the air in a way that it is above the water pump’s level.

Now pour the water from the jar into the hose.

Place your thumb over the hose to build up pressure for some minutes, then turn on the water pump.

Once you feel the water against your thumb, turn off the pump.

4. Taking the Hose Out of the Pump

After taking the hose out of the pump, reconnect the water line again, open one of the faucets installed in the RV and turn the water pump on.

Once you notice water coming out the faucet after a few seconds, close the faucet and turn the pump off.

A successfully primed RV water pump is one that has water coming out of the faucet after all these processes stated above.

What Not to Do When Priming RV Water Pump

To be sure of a smooth process when learning how to prime RV water pump, here are some tips and warnings that you should focus on:

1. Please make use of hoses that are designed mainly for drinking water to maintain its cleanliness.

2. Considering the amount of water in the freshwater tank is very important, especially if there is just a little amount of freshwater available at the campsite. Water weighs approximately 8 pounds (lbs.) per gallon. Therefore, a 50-lb holding tank can add up to 400 lbs. of water to your RV freshwater tank.

3. Knowing exactly where the water pump in the RV is located should be a major priority when you first purchase a recreational vehicle.

4. If the RV water pump is not easily accessible, the best thing to do is to trace the water line from its specific location to where it connects to a sink. Then remove that line and use it as the rubber hose as addressed in the steps listed above.

5. Pour around a gallon of water to the line instead of a jar full to avoid creating an air trap in it.

6. Priming RV water pump after storing it for a while during winter and using antifreeze in the water lines, leave the faucet open and the pump running until the freshwater from the tank is totally clear. The water produced should also be clear before turning off the faucet and pump.

Note that antifreeze left in the supply of water can lead to certain ailments.

Water pumps play a very crucial role in an RV. There are two types of RV water pumps:

Freshwater pumps

Macerators

Freshwater RV pumps help to supply a specific amount of water supply every minute for a purpose.

In fact:

Most freshwater RV pumps are capable of supplying about 3.5 gallons of water every minute. But for a larger recreational vehicle, you may require a water pump that can supply up to 5.3 gallons of water every minute.

While freshwater pumps help to supply water, macerators help to supply pressurized water from the RV tank.

RV water pumps’ voltage ratings are basically of two types:

12V RV water pumps

24V RV water pumps.

But a standard recreational vehicle makes use of a 12V battery powered water pump.
